ESAGCS Chesapeake Challenge – Meeting and Golf Results

In May Tom Tipton and staff hosted the 2nd annual Chesapeake Challenge, a joint meeting with the ESAGCS and the Mid Atlantic chapter of the GCSAA.  The meeting was held at Prospect Bay Country Club.

We were pleased to have Dr. Peter Dernoeden, Professor & Extension Specialist of Turfgrass Management at the University of Maryland.  Dr. Dernoeden reviewed some of the highlights of the last 30 years of his research in the field of turf management, specifically regarding disease management.  It was very interesting to hear from one of the leading experts who has done so much to arm Superintendents with information and best management practices to combat turf diseases.

Members of the Maryland Turfgrass Association were also on hand to talk to superintendents about the Turfgrass Endowed Chair Fund.  From this news release from the University of Maryland:

"The goal is to expand the fund to eventually support an Endowed Chair for Turfgrass Pathology in the Department of Plant Science & Landscape Architecture (PSLA).

‘This fund will not only help grow our turfgrass program at the University of Maryland but will also eventually help recruit an industry expert to lead the program and help it to prosper,’ said Peter Dernoeden, Ph.D., a University of Maryland Extension turfgrass management specialist and PSLA professor. ‘We’re so thankful to the Maryland Turfgrass Council for laying this foundation.’

The Maryland Turfgrass Council is a non-profit organization dedicated to the improvement of the turfgrass industry in the state of Maryland and has more than 1,500 active members.",

The golf event, The Chesapeake Challenge, rounded out the day at Prospect Bay.  This event is a Ryder Cup style formatted, 2 man best ball match play, pitting teams from the ESAGCS against the MAAGCS.

The Eastern Shore was again victorious, winning their matches 12.5 to 6.5.  Full results can be found in the ‘Golf Shots’ section of the website.

Everyone had a great time, and we greatly appreciate the participation of all ESAGCS members, as well as the members of the MAAGCS.

See you next year!
