March 2014 Membership Meeting

 Good Morning!

We are excited for the opening ESAGCS meeting of 2014!  This year we are pleased to be "returning" to Chester River Yacht and CC.  Hopefully the snow that has been plaguing the area will subside and we can have a great day of education and golf.

The USGA’s Elliot Dowling will be the associations first guest speaker of 2014.  From the USGA website:

"Elliott is an agronomist in the USGA Green Section’s Mid-Atlantic
Region.  Elliott works out of the Glen
Mills, PA office with Mid-Atlantic Region Director Darin Bevard, helping golf
facilities maintain better playing conditions through the USGA Course Consulting
Service on-site visits, educational outreach, and research throughout the
five-state region.

Before joining the USGA, Elliott was golf course
superintendent at Cress Creek Country Club in Naperville, IL. He also was the
superintendent at the Ivanhoe Club (Ivanhoe, Illinois) and an assistant
superintendent at Oakland Hills Country Club (Bloomfield Hills, MI), in
addition to golf course internships in Illinois, Colorado, and California.

Elliott received his bachelor of science degree in Horticulture
with an emphasis in turfgrass management from Iowa State University, and his masters
of professional studies degree in turfgrass management from Penn State
University."

He is a Penn State grad with a BS in Turfgrass management, was an assistant at Deerfield Golf and Tennis in Newark, De for 5 and 1/2 years before taking the superintendent position at Chester River Yacht & Country Club.  He is currently in my 13th year at the club.

The 18-hole Chester River Yacht & Country Club in Chestertown, MD is
a private golf course that opened in 1927.  Chester River was built in two phases, 1st phase was constructed in 1927 by Alexander Findlay.  It was a nine hole layout until 1974 when Ed Ault was commissioned to built the 2nd nine.  Chester River Yacht & Country Club is a member owned club that consists of 600 members.  Chester River Yacht & Country Club measures 6355 yards from the
longest tees and has a slope rating of 121 and a 70.2 USGA rating. The
course features 3 sets of tees.
